Michigan Modern Residence:
Nestled in a beautifully expansive wooded sand dune property near Lake Michigan, this unique modern residence takes advantage of nature by creating interesting indoor-outdoor relationships throughout the home. The wrap-around deck is truly cantilevered (no supports underneath) and lures one around the corner to a private semi-enclosed sunset terrace complete with an outdoor fireplace for cozy evenings. The home is wrapped in a variety of sophisticated materials including rainscreen siding, corrugated steel, and modular cast stone. The black-framed windows punctuate the envelope with strategic placement to capture specific scenic views. The central "core" of the home consists of a series of utilitarian spaces (ie. powder room, storage, etc.) cleverly concealed behind a series of teak wood hidden doors that, when closed, creates a stunning wood accent wall off the living room and kitchen. The kitchen, also in teak wood, harbors a pair of hidden doors built into the tall cabinetry wall which leads to a walk-in pantry and a large craft room behind. The lower level contains a private home office, bedrooms, and exercise room, and a bath. Inspired by a Japanese garden lantern, the attached multi-car garage is clad with corrugated steel with a series of large black panel louvers above each door which house hidden LED strip lights. At dusk and into the evening hours, the siding itself becomes the light fixture bringing a unique dynamic to the already sophisticated skin of the building.
